Happy Birthday, Abilene! On this day in Texas history — March 15, 1881 — the town of Abilene was officially born.

With the Texas & Pacific Railroad newly completed through the area, excitement was high as a town lot auction was held to establish the new community. The response was incredible. By the end of the very next day, 317 lots had already been sold, bringing in a total of $51,360 — a huge sum of money at the time.

The remaining lots were quickly snapped up through private sales, and just like that, Abilene began to take shape on the Texas prairie.

What started as a railroad town would grow into one of West Texas’ most important cities — home to ranchers, rail workers, soldiers, and generations of Texans who helped shape its story.

From a dusty rail stop to a thriving Texas city… Abilene’s story started with a single auction.
